Fatigue failure
Component strain on account of frequent load changes can lead to so called fatigue failures, showing up, amongst other possible failure modes, as broken solder joints. These breaks can be attributed to either a mechanical load or to thermal load changes. It is for this reason that solder joints may not be exposed to mechanical loads, especially not to expansion due to different thermal coefficients of expansion.
